Sinclair UAS Training Center and Elizabeth City State University Partner to Enhance UAS Training and Research

March 25, 2019

Sinclair Elizabeth City State University (ECSU) and the Sinclair College National UAS Training and Certification Center have signed a Memorandum of Understanding to enhance training and applied research for UAS.

As part of their Memorandum of Understanding, ECSU and Sinclair will host a joint exercise in June, bringing together their campuses through the use of Simlat’s UAS training software housed within both institutions, as well as the Live, Virtual, Constructive (LVC) capabilities that Simlat and Sinclair have developed over the past few years, to help enable the integration of participants in Ohio and North Carolina.

The exercise will include live UAS and manned flights in Ohio, as well as virtual UAS operations conducted from the Sinclair and ECSU campuses. Sinclair ground control vehicles will also be deployed to conduct an emergency response scenario.

“The partnership, which was recently signed by leaders at the two institutions, brings ECSU and Sinclair together for training and applied research in the area of UAS,” explains Dr. Kuldeep Rawat, ECSU’s aviation program director and dean of the Area of Science, Technology and Mathematics.

“The partnership with Sinclair will begin an era of collaborative research focusing on the unmanned traffic management of drones.”

Dr. Andrew Shepherd, executive director and chief scientist for UAS at Sinclair, adds, “the partnership between Sinclair and ESCU comes at a great time with both institutions launching their own bachelor degree programs in UAS in fall 2019 and the continued rapid advancement of UAS related technologies, regulations, and applications.

“The partnership will enable the development of resources and capabilities for joint education, training, and applied research and development opportunities to the benefit of economic development and workforce development in Ohio, North Carolina, and the broader nation.”
