Unmanned Aircraft Systems (IJAS) technology is evolving rapidly, and the FAA is working to keep pace with industry to integrate UAS into the National Airspace System. A gap in UAS integration is having standards developed by industry, which the FAA can use for policy and rulemaking activity. When all current standards,as well as standards in development, are identified and cataloged the research leading to future standards can be identified. The FAA needs to map standards to clearly defined future research projects. This research shall:

  • Identify, categorize and track an evolving list of existing publicly available UAS standards, as well as standards under development for civil, military and foreign UAS systems.
  • Provide a tool to identify the most pertinent ongoing research tasks that inform standards development.
  • Identify gaps in current regulatory guidance.
  • recommend future research aligned with the FAA's UAS Integration Research Plan's roadmap.
